Update: Mobile3DTV @ NEM Summit

Mobile3DTV participated successfully in this year's NEM Summit in Saint Malo, France. After we had presented our first DVB-H stereo video streaming system last year, we informed about our user studies this year.

We demonstrated our current work on optimizing the mobile 3DTV system through different user studies along the production chain. The visitors at our booth were able to experience real test scenarios. They watched the original test items of our coding study or were able to get information about different transmission artifacts.

Additionally,we informed about our view on user-centered quality evaluation and introduced our Open Profiling of Quality method.

A short coverage of us can be found in ICT Results' report. Thanks to all who visited our booth. Thanks for your interest and your fruitful feedback and discussions. CU next year at NEM Summit in Nantes.

MOBILE3DTV at GSMA Mobile World Congers 2009 in Barcelona

MOBILE3DTV demonstration was presented at GSMA Mobile World Congers on 16-19 February 2009 in Barcelona (http://www.mobileworldcongress.com/). We presented the current state of the development on the project with very spectacular demonstration. Participants in the demonstration from MMSolutions site were Nikolay Daskalov – CEO, Radoslav Ibrishimov and Gjorgji Rosikopulos.

We shared some space at the OMAP zone with Texas Instruments, which are our long term partners in many projects, and exchanged few ideas and impressions from the congress . We also met few of the partners in the MOBILE3DTV project and discussed some new concepts about the evolution of the project. During the exhibition we had the opportunity to see the “beyond tomorrow” vision of the mobile technology. We also demonstrated our achievements in the mobile image capturing technology, such as 8MP camera framework, stereo-capture module, ect.

The kit for the demonstration was developed by MMSolutions. It was based on standard TI development platform, widely spread among the mobile application developers. The content was delivered by both MMSolutions and Tampere University of Technology. The videos were specially prepared for the congress, and were of a great interest for the visitors, who saw the demonstration.

We previewed the spectators the true 3-D effect and the possibility of implementing this future technology in multimedia mobile device. Every observer shared a positive opinion for the demonstration. They confirmed that they will keep an eye on the progress of the project in Internet with interest. Based on our observations and the conversations with every spectator of the demonstration, we think that all of them will be consumers of the device in future.

In the end we would like to thank all the visitors, interested in the project, for sharing their opinion about the demonstration. We would like also to thank Atanas Gotchev and Atanas Boev for helping us with the preparation of the content and the preparation of the brochures and ad materials. Special thanks to all the other participants in the project for their help in achieving this level of the technology.

Mobile3DTV @ ICT Event Lyon

Mobile3DTV successfully participated at the exhibition of the 2008 ICT Event in Lyon. We presented our work at the booth of the 3D Media Cluster. The project was represented by Satu and Dominik as user experience researchers of Mobile3DTV and Aljoscha who also represented the 3D Media Cluster.

We shared the booth with our collegues from 3D4You and together we had a great time at the exhibtion. It all started with setting up the booth which again ment to bring the whole setup from Tampere all the way to Lyon in one cabin-class bag. But when we arrived at the Conference Center of Lyon, we were very happy to see that we had a perfectly located booth in the exhibition area with some white sofas and chairs so that we could arrange a very comfortable surrounding for all our visitors.

During the three days of exhibition there were a lot of people visiting at our booth - both fascinated about the 3DTV technology and interested in the project and its technological progress. We had great talks with other partners, academic staff, people from industry, and of course Members of the European Commission which made us very proud.

At the booth we did not only present a real-time 3D Video transmission over DVB-H. Satu and me used the possibilities to present our user-centered approach which we are taking within the project. Many visitors were very interested in our work and the results of our first studies into user needs and expectations about mobile 3D video and television.

Finally, I want to thank all people who were involved in the preparation of this successful presentation: Of course Satu and Aljoscha for their work at our booth, and Atanas Boev and Atanas Gotchev for helping with the preparation of the setup and the poster.

If you missed us this time, just watch out for the people in white, green and blue at the next exhibition or stay informed via this blog.

NEM Summit - a follow up

The first NEM Summit was a success. Mobile3DTV contributed to that success by presenting two papers and hosting a booth at the exhibition.

Our two papers were scheduled for the session 'Networks and Services II: Evaluation of the DVB Systems' chaired by Andrew Oliphant from BBC, vice-chair of NEM.
We made a single presentation, presenting two papers and given by three presenters. The style was quite unusual but later on people came to congratulate us for it.

At our booth, we presented a real-time 3D Video transmission over DVB-H. The whole setup - a broadcasting server, and four devices equipped with DVB-H receivers and autostereoscopic displays - could fit in a cabin-class bag. Here is a picture of our boot after unpacking and just before the crowd to come:

The equipment travelled (in the above-mentioned cabin-class bag) by bus, plane and car, half way across Europe from Tampere to Saint-Malo :)

There was an entusiastic group of people behid that demo: Oguz, Anil and Gozde from METU, Heribert and Aljoscha from HHI, Antti, Atanas Boev and Mihail from TTY.

For people who missed it, we are going to show an improved version at the ICT Event in Lyon 25-27 November. We are going to be at the booth of the 3D Media Cluster, which is Booth F11. See you there :-)
